With passion and integrity, Unity House embraces the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political, and social rights. We work together to open the doors of access and opportunity for everyone, particularly those in greatest need. Unity House celebrated 50 years in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the increased demands for services brought on by the economic impact of the pandemic, Unity House never closed doors. The agency pivoted to continue to serve under stressful conditions, offering enhanced services and gaining valuable agility. This is months after Republicans ousted their previous speaker, Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., from the job, after he had been there not even nine months, following McCarthy’s negotiations with President Joe Biden on the debt-ceiling crisis last May.

We are a Rensselaer County-based human service agency that provides a wide range of services to meet the otherwise unmet needs of people in our community who are hurting and struggling. We assist those who are living in poverty, adults living with mental illness or HIV/AIDS, victims of domestic violence, and children with developmental delays. Help for victims of domestic violence was one of the earliest services Unity House offered when it was founded in 1971. Since then, the program has evolved to offer a 33-bed shelter, a non-residential program, legal services, counseling, housing, and more.
A waiting list currently exists for both therapy and housing services. In the renovated Lansingburgh location, which is larger and more accessible to clients than the previous site in Troy, Unity House anticipates being able to successfully assist more victims and survivors of domestic violence with improved and more dignified service delivery. Unity House offers several housing options so that adults with mental illness, people with HIV/AIDS, people who are homeless, and victims of domestic violence can live safely and self sufficiently in the community with dignity and independence.
